We enjoyed another fabulous event last night, "Mothers and Daughters Pamper Each Other", with doTERRA representative, Abbie Drage. She showed us so many fun and creative ways to put these wonderful essential oils to good use in our every day lives, including how to incorporate them into our food and home spa (see below for her sugar scrub recipe!) We greatly enjoyed making new friends and spending the evening with the ladies! Thank you so much to Abbie for hosing this event and providing such a refreshing outlook on ways to better treat ourselves. Irresistible Sugar Scrub

4 oz of Sugar

2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil or Shea Butter

3-5 drops of essential oil of choice

When Pat Pignanelli asked us to decorate for the First Annual Holladay City Scholarship Dinner, we knew exactly what we wanted to do to set the mood for the evening!

Congratulations to Claire Thomas and Josue Barraza from Skyline High, Grace Hong and Zachary Wright from Olympus High and Hannah Hirst and Braden Tedrow from Cottonwood. Each student received a $500.00 scholarship award to continue their education.

New in the Shop!

Right now we have some really fun things in the shop for both babies and small children. We recently got in this great plush Noah's Ark set that comes complete with 6 "bean" filled animals (tiger, zerbra, lion, giraffe, elephant, and leopard), and has a little handle, making it the perfect tote for any tot to carry! One thing that makes this so great is that it is totally washable, so it can stand to take a little wear and tear while on the road, and then be washed up and back to new in no time. It is perfect for travel and a great quiet toy to bring along to church! This makes for a fun and unique gift for your children, grandchildren, or friends. Our two year old absolutely LOVES hers, and spends the better part of an hour every day taking the animals in and out of the boat and carrying it all over the house, watch the video of the two year old testimonial!

An Evening of Excellance!

Saturday night was FABULOUS! We enjoyed such a wonderful evening with truly amazing women. Quinn gave a great workshop on finding greater joy in our lives, teaching on how to "be present" and clear our minds of unproductive and stressful thinking that adds stress to our lives and detracts from the beautiful moments that surround us every day. She challenged each of us to create a "joy list" of 25 things that bring us joy, and to use it to draw happiness during the more challenging times of our day. There was a wonderful feeling in the room as Quinn spoke, I think we all greatly benefited from her message!

After being emotionally uplifted by Quinn, we were privelaged to hear from Katie Dudley, an extremely talented Utah Photographer who specializes in food, children, and family photography. She taught us great tricks on how to better capture the beautiful moments in our life with our cameras, encouraging us to go beyond "auto" mode and explore the various options that our cameras have to offer. She also taught us about composition as well as the importance of lighting in photography and how to capture the perfect light so as to capture the perfect picture!

To conclude the evening, we heard from Abbie on the powerful benefits of doTERRA essential oils, and the incredible ability they have to ease stress, tension, headaches, and achieve an overall feeling of balance and serenity. After hearing about some of the wonderful things these amazing oils have to offer, we enjoyed making bath salts and getting to try the oils out for ourselves! Abbie gave a great introductory class on these oils, but she was only scratching the surface! We are so excited to host another event here at Brown Floral to further delve into the world doTERRA, so if you couldn't make it last Saturday, or if you came but are wanting to learn more (I know I am!) then come on August 5th to our "Mothers and Daughters Pamper Each Other" event. Flowers for The Utah Bride!

Well the Ultimate Utah Wedding is underway with our soon to be newlyweds and now they need your help to plan the big day! This morning we appeared on Good Things Utah and presented Lee and Katrina with two beautiful arrangements for their centerpieces...

Design #1

Our first design we decided to go very contemporary. Simple yet elegant. Here we have James Story Orchids in a tall square glass vase with Manzanita Branches and Curly Willow to mimic the branch-like stems of the orchids. We've added a few smaller pieces at the base with votive candles. Since the venue has such high ceilings we really wanted height to play a role in this design. The great thing about these particular orchids is that they make such a statement by themselves you really don't have to do much else with them.

Our next design was a little more methodical. Since the couple is getting married on the 50 yard line, we wanted to incorporate the look of the football field into the design. By tiering these black wooden containers we were able to moss the bottom tier bringing the look of the grass into the arrangement. We have a great mix of flowers in this design. We've got beautiful white and red Dahlias which are a great Summer wedding flower - they come in a variety of colors and sizes. We've got white Gerbera Daisies with dark centers to tie in the containers. We've got beautiful Red Hypericum berries, Safari Sunset, and Red Roses. We've added a Lichen Branch to bring that mossy look from the bottom tier and incorporate it in the flowers. So as you can see we have a lot of textures here - a really fun centerpiece!

Our crew spent the most fabulous weekend at Deer Valley for the Annual Utah Professional Floral Convention.We learned all of the latest and greatest techniques and trends. Susie entered the design contest and took second place earning $150.00 cash award! Way to go Susie, we’re so proud of you!

Learning to Find Greater Joy

The Everything in Order event on Saturday was truly a day of inspiration. Amanda Dickson of KSL Radio gave a wonderful lecture on loving your work, and how by improving the quality of your work, you are improving the quality of your life. I loved especially the quote that she gave "The joy (or lack of joy) is not in the job- it is in us."

We were also privileged to hear from a number of authors, life coaches, and motivational speakers who talked on subjects such as taking control of your time, de-cluttering your mind and world, regaining your energy, and turning your financial world into the secure, abundance producing, saving place you want it to be.

It was such a wonderful and positive atmosphere, being surrounded by a large group of women who are all striving to better themselves and find greater balance and joy in their life, it was a wonderful event to be a part of!

It's that time of year again where brides call and come in to talk about their wedding flowers. We thought we'd post a quick guideline of things to bring to your consultation. An organized bride who has given some thought to her floral desires before coming in will have a much more productive meeting than one who has not taken the time to give it some thought!

Item #1 -
Bring a list of the florals that you will need. Nothing is worse than a bride who answers the question "how many brides maids do you have?" by counting them on her fingers!

Item #2 -
Pictures of both bridal gown and brides maids dresses. The more we can get a feel for your style, the better.

Items #3 -
Floral inspiration pictures. This is really a must. Collect pictures of flowers that show your style. A picture is truly worth a thousand words and most brides do not know the name of many flowers. What better way to show the texture, color, style and size of each flower element than showing us pictures. We highly recommend TheKnot.com and other sources for finding great, real wedding photos. Most online sources even let you search by color and season!

Also, if there are flowers or styles you don't really care for, photos of them as a "Don't" are helpful also. Remember, we are trying to get into your head, as quickly and efficiently as possible during your consultation.

Item #4 -
Lastly but still importantly, come in with a budget. Here's were people get tripped up. They've been told, never tell them how much you are willing or able to pay but with your flowers, that is exactly what you should do. If a bride tells us what she needs, what general look and feel she wants, what colors and what season, We are much more likely to be able to give her suggestions to help her stick to her budget than show her things that blow the doors off of it! Your florist should be your partner. If you do not trust us to be honest with you, you probably should not even be coming for a consultation. We're not here to take advantage, we're here to help you create the wedding of your dreams!

Angela Williams of Polish Design helped us with our "new look". It was truly one of the hardest things we have done so far (keep in mind we haven't had a Valentine's day yet!) We weren't about to change the name of the business since Brown Floral has such a rich heritage. But the purple Iris looked a little dated so we set out to re-brand. Angela helped us along in our journey. We discovered that finding just the perfect look for your business takes a lot of effort but here's what she created for us and we love it!

The best thing about buying Brown Floral is that all of the employees stayed with us with the exception of a driver. We are so fortunate to have such a talented group of gals on our team! We have added Tiffany Larson who took the lead on this wedding. It turned out absolutely beautiful. These are pictures of Kim Green's wedding that was held at the Millcreek Inn on December ___th, 2010. Congratulations Kim!

With the passing of Susie's father-in-law, we saw her talent shine through the dust of the remodel as she carefully prepared for his funeral. She thoughtfully prepared each piece to honor him. Her love for him and her art was so impressive.

As of October 1st, 2010, we are the new owners of Brown Floral!

How do I begin to describe this partnership? Well, Rob and I began working together a few years ago in Franchise Development for AlphaGraphics. We were over the Western Region of the United States. We worked hard and were pretty successful. We kept coming up with different ideas to develop business and after awhile decided to put our creative efforts into something we could call our own. So with the support of our spouses, Sandy and Nathan, we decided to buy a local business and Tuh Duh!
